Prosecutors begin playing undercover recordings in state rep’s trial Jurors in the bribery trial of state Rep. Derrick Smith are listening today to a series of secretly recorded conversations made by an FBI informant who captured the West Side legislator lamenting how little money he had for his 2012 primary campaign. “I don’t have no cash on me … I can give you a couple of dollars for gas,” Smith told the undercover informant, who was a low-level worker on Smith’s campaign, in one recorded call from Jan. 26, 2012. “I’m runnin’ tight right now.” In the conversations played today, a frazzled Smith discussed how he needed to go out and knock on doors all day so people in his diverse district would know who he was. Smith also complained about his own campaign staff insisting on following him around as he worked the neighborhoods. “I don’t need nobody watching me!” Smith exclaimed. “I don’t need no f—ing bodyguard. My bodyguard is God.” Jurors also listened to a recording in which Smith and the undercover operative – a convicted felon whom Smith knew as “Pete” – planned to visit a day care center.
