Prospect and Sherwoods first WWI enlistments One hundred years ago today (on 11 August 1914), recruitment of the first volunteers of the Australian Expeditionary Forces were held at Victoria Barracks, Paddington. Once the successful recruits had passed their medical tests, they were immediately mobilised to the Agricultural Grounds for a few days training before being shipped overseas. The recruitment was reported in the Evening News newspaper report of that day, which you can read online via the link below. Six residents from Prospect and Sherwood were part of the 1,500 volunteers who enlisted on that day. They were: Pte John Stanley MOFFATT (Reg. No. 244), Westmead Pte Alfred FISK (Reg. No. 490), Guildford Cpl William ACHESON (Reg. No. 933), South Merrylands Pte Walter Henry JOWERS (Reg. No. 995), Wentworthville Pte Frederick JOWERS (Reg. No. 999), Wentworthville Pte Victor Hartley PERRY (Reg. No. 1024), Harris Park It was possibly due to the quick mobilisation to the training camps, that none of these early recruits appear in the photographic record of ‘Parramatta and District Soldiers who fought in The Great War 1914-1919’, published by the Cumberland Argus. However we will provide links to The AIF Project website records for each of these brave locals who stepped up to serve our nation 100 years ago today.
