Prosperity preachers have led many to believe that wealthy people are the ones serving God while poor people have either wronged Him or are not serving Him enough. One was preaching the other day and asked his congregation: How can you say you are serving God and you still drink garri? And so gradually...psychologically, we are building a society where we no longer care how a man makes his money. Anyhow it is made, we believe the man has been blessed by God. He must be divinely favoured. As for the man with no job; the hungry and homeless...or the average citizen, he is not serving God enough. It doesnt matter if he is honest and hardworking. We hate him for not being blessed with riches by God. Something must be wrong somewhere, we say. Our God is a rich God. He became poor so that we can be rich. How can a man truly serving a rich God be poor? And so we welcome moral decadence, embrace the get-rich-quick-through-any-means mentally and detest honest and hardworking people. It is well....Abi no be so dem dey tok am?
