Proteas, Bafana face must-win contests By Staff Writer Cape Town - The Proteas and Bafana Bafana face big make-or-break matches over the weekend. The Proteas’ hunt for a major ICC title will continue on Friday when they face the West Indies in a crucial Champions Trophy group match in Cardiff, Wales. The game is a shoot-out, as only the winner will progress to the semifinals of the tournament. The Proteas lost their first match against India, but are back in the mix after defeating Pakistan in difficult conditions on Monday. Bafana can give coach Gordon Igesund the ultimate Fathers Day gift on Sunday with victory over Ethiopia in a must-win 2014 Fifa World Cup qualifier in Addis Ababa. Bafana need a victory to knock the east Africans off the top of their group, and increase their chances of qualifying for next year’s football showpiece in Brazil. A loss shatters Bafana’s dreams. A draw is not the end of the world for Igesund’s charges, but then their fate won’t be in their own hands in the remaining matches. Bafana will then have to beat Botswana, and hope the Central African Republic don’t lose against Ethiopia in the final round of qualifiers in September. The Springboks’ match against Scotland is sandwiched in between the Proteas and Bafana on Saturday afternoon. But don’t waste your biltong and beer, as the Boks should run out comfortable winners.
