Protect the bears of the Red River Gorge! Black bears have returned to the Red River Gorge and their population will increase with each passing year. With Spring Break just weeks away, campers need to properly store food and garbage to prevent bears from becoming food conditioned (aggressive in the search for human food and trash). When camping in the front country, store food in your vehicle when not in use. Dispose of garbage in receptacles provided by the Forest Service. If receptacles are not present or full, store garbage in your vehicle. Storing food and garbage in your vehicle is safe because bears in the Red River Gorge are not yet food conditioned. In the backcountry, food and garbage must be hung in a tree at least ten feet up and four feet away from the trunk. The use of a bear canister is also permitted. Never burn or bury your food scraps or garbage. This video shows the consequences of food conditioning of black bears in Kentucky. Please don’t let this happen in the Red River Gorge! youtube/watch?v=uWOHro5mtck
