Protecting homes in the wildland interface is a fact of life for today’s fire departments. Because of this, Engine 9 with rookie firefighters Brook Brown and Jay Hagen (son of SVFD veteran John Hagen) spent most of the day Monday assisting with other agencies on a prescribed burn at Turnbull Wildlife Refuge. Using a drip torch, the rookies started numerous fires and were able to observe fire behavior as it worked its way through the 50 acre tract. Prescribed burns are done to improve the health of the forest, prevent devastating stand replacement fires and ensure the continued availability of an area’s use by the forest animals.
