Protest against Army repression Army beats Sarpanch to pulp Srinagar, July 18:Army personnel in North Kashmir’s Haril area of Handwara thrashed few people including the Sarpanch without any provocation against which the people came on roads and staged a massive protest against the erring Army personnel. Sarpanch Nazir Ahmed told CNS that 30 RR personnel were patrolling in the area when they checked the identity cards of few people who were sitting on shops. “Without any provocation these Army personnel started thrashing these people and as a Sarpanch when I tried to intervene, they beat me to pulp as well,” he said adding that Army personnel in the area have let loose a reign of terror in the area as no one in able to control them. People resented the Army action and staged massive protests against the Army. They demanded stern action against the erring personnel. Traffic cam to halt for hours as the protestors blocked the road and did not allow any vehicle to proceed. Police officials reached on spot and pacified the protestors. “Police assured us that such incident would not occur in future,” Sarpanch said. Reacting sharply to the incident, MLA Langate Engineer Rashid told CNS that its not new in Kashmir. “We all know that Army rules in Kashmir and they are free to do anything. Government exists by name only,” he said adding that Nazir Ahmed is the block president of Awami Ithihaad Party.
