Proton therapy is drastically changing survival rates in pediatric cancer cases. Most AT/RT patients are under 3 years old. This cancer has to be treated with radiation or it will take over quickly. Up until proton therapy, children under 3 years were not able to receive radiation making the prognosis of the disease pretty grim. Proton therapy is a more accurate form of radiation that pinpoints the affected area without damaging healthy tissues.
