Proud of Lil Ray and the Neumann football team through adversity. Week: Ray Perry, St. John Neumann Scott Clair football | st john neumann high NAPLES, Fla. - There’s no “I” in team, and there’s no “I” in Ray Perry. Try getting the St. John Neumann running back to talk about his 215-yard, three-touchdown performance in the Celtics’ win over Class 2A-District 6 foe, Marco Island Academy, on Friday, and all Perry says is “We. We. We.” “We practiced hard all week knowing it would be a tough game,” he said. “We took what they gave us. We’ve faced adversity all year with injuries and we stuck together.” And about his game-sealing interception in the final minute? “Coach put us in position and we made the play,” said Perry, a senior. “It was all the coaches.” It was a must win for the Celtics if they had any hopes of making the playoffs. With touchdown runs of 49, 11, and 75 yards, Perry kept Neumann (3-4, 2-1) on track and in second place in district play. “Ray really stepped up and took over the game for us,” Neumann coach Alfredo Molina said. “It was a must win game for us. He knew what was on the line. Ray is a four-year starter. He’s one of the smartest players I ever coached. He did what he had to do on Friday.” Perry said he has been contacted by a number of colleges but has yet to make a commitment. For now, he’s just concerned about leading his team into the postseason. It’s Perry’s style of leadership on and off the field that Molina admires. “Ray is a quiet leader,” Molina said. “He steps up when he has to. He’s not a vocal, rah-rah type of guy. He leads by his actions.” Perry has had other outstanding games in his prep career, but he said Friday’s game was more special because of his teammates. “This means more tonight,” Perry said after the game. “It’s a new era, a new brotherhood. I love these guys.”
