Proverbs 22:11, He who loves a pure heart and whose speech is - TopicsExpress

Proverbs 22:11, He who loves a pure heart and whose speech is gracious will have the king for his friend. Do we really love the pure heart? Of course we want others to treat us with a pure heart; that goes without saying. But do we treat others that way and do we really admire those whose ways are pure and upright in all they do. Don’t we many times secretly admire those who are sneaky and underhanded, who scheme and find some way to come out on top of whatever they are doing? As long as they are not doing it to us? Do we really love those whose speech is gracious? Again, of course we do as long as they are gracious to us. But don’t we enjoy the sharp, biting, and cutting remarks that are made and pass as humor in our world today. Don’t we admire the person who always has the quick comeback, the smart remark, the perfect response, as long as it is not directed toward us? Maybe we need to think more seriously about the attitude God expects from us. Maybe we need to consider how pure our attitude really is and how pure it really needs to be and maybe we need to consider carefully the words we say. James tells us that our tongues are restless evils, full of deadly poison, and that no man is able to tame those tongues. We need to be very careful. The more I think about having the king for a friend, the more I think about the greatest king, the king of kings. Who better to have for a friend than God? Our commitment to God needs to be complete and the guiding force in all we do and say. We would be quick to count God as our friend, but I wonder if God would recognize us as such. What do our actions and attitudes say? What do our words and deeds reveal about the way we think about God? Father, help me live closer to you each day. In Jesus’ name, amen.
