Proverbs 6:16-19 is a representation of the sinfulness of man, and acts as a summary of the previous warnings provided by Solomon. The sequence of the numbers 6 and 7 are used to grab the readers attention as well as to represent totality. The use of the number 7 in the Bible often refers to completion or totality. haughty eyes - winks lying tongue - crooked speech hands - finger heart - heart feet - feet false witness - devises evil sows discord - sowing discord Solomon adds actions to the previous warnings to further express why these 7 things are so dangerous and need to be avoided. haughty means intentionally and with no concern for Gods commands lying tongue speaks to the evil use of the tongue hands that shed blood heart that is the motivation behind evil feet that are quick to get to evil false witness that gladly tells lies sows discord among the brother I do not know about you, but this concrete summary of sinfulness sums up the world we live in today. I also know that there are times when I have either done all of these or at least thought about them. Three of these really speak to me and convict me of areas that I need to improve: haughty - I know Gods commands, yet sometimes I just disregard them. I do not want to do this any longer. heart as motivation to do evil - There are times when I realize I still have bitterness in my heart for things that have been done to me. I want to remove this from my heart in totality. sows discord - There is nothing worse than a professing believer participating in gossip or rumors about another believer. The body of Christ is supposed to be comprised of unity and love. Sowing discord is the exact opposite of this mandate so beautifully pictured for us in Ephesians 4 (unity) and 5 (love). I pray the Holy Spirit will increasingly make me aware of these areas in my life and help me improve in these areas to the point that they no longer exist in my life.
