Providing Accurate Advice and Guidance for students? Are you using’ Grade Predictor?’ youtube/watch?v=y_fAEINY0XY When I trained as a Careers Adviser we had a seven point plan that we followed in order to give students comprehensive and accurate advice and guidance in relation to their future career. This included: • an analysis of interests, it is always good to pursue a career you are interested in • a check on health issues, for example if you are colour blind electrical work is not really possible • a view on what potential the student had to achieve in subjects they were choosing for the future. This was generally based on grade predictions and was crucial to show the potential for success at level 3 and also of course to show the likelihood of getting into some of the more competitive degree courses or indeed jobs further down the line. There was little point in choosing subjects you would not do well in. I had many a stern response from parents/carers and students when I said I am not sure you will get the results to access that. It was not easy .In those days I had to rely on teacher predictions and young people’s opinions. Of course there are many famous stories of how the Careers Adviser got it wrong, the England international who was told they would never be a footballer, the doctor who was told to consider non-professional careers and so forth. Good accurate grade predictions are now crucial to Heads of Sixths as well as Careers Specialists. Schools/Academies funding depends on getting students on the right course. Dropout and poor results will have negative consequences and reflect badly on the establishment. Not only that of course it is doing the learner no favours being on the wrong course. Accurate grade prediction is more important than ever with the right combination of subjects being required for numerous degrees/ jobs. Competition is fierce and students need courses that showcase their talent and ability. The wide availability of different types of level 3 courses means that students may be suited to different approaches to learning and need help choosing those they can best succeed in. The Learning Plus UK grade predictor gives enormous support to an analysis of student performance in the future. It predicts Level 3 performance based on a student’s GCSE grades using information accumulated nationally .This prediction can compare likely success in different types of courses such as A ‘level compared to BTEC. It is a tool that can be used for sixth form/college interviews or would be useful to schools/academy careers advisers and indeed to those supplying advice as part of an exam results service in August. Of course there will be one or two exceptions to the accuracy of a student’s predictions through the tool, someone who is a recent entrance into the country or someone who has extended absence due to sickness are two exceptions that spring to mind. The predictor does however provide a robust approach to help with the self-awareness of the learner and to get them on the right course. Are you using the grade predictor to help post 16 subject and course choice? Are you sharing the information with students and parents/carers? Is your school/academy providing access to it for the Careers Adviser during careers interviews and exams results services? If not you should be giving this serious thought. This is any easy to use tool which is well researched and can help to improve results and destinations. Let us know your experience of its use and your ideas for further development
