Provincial Announcement: Repaving brings smooth ride for mountain visitors Travellers on Highway 1 between Kananaskis Country and the Banff Park East Gates will soon enjoy a smoother ride as re-paving begins. Those taking Kananaskis Lakes Trail in Peter Lougheed Provincial Park will also have a nicer drive as 12.5 kilometres of the road are being re-paved as part of the combined $13.2 million project. Spray patching will begin on Highway 1 Monday, August 19 covering portions of the 32 kilometres from the Banff Park East Gates east to the Kananaskis River crossing. Paving will follow in about two weeks. During the work, drivers will experience intermittent single-lane access in either direction, with signs and flag persons directing traffic. Other major work will include replacing concrete median barriers east of the park gates, overhead lighting system at Harvie Heights interchange and guardrails along the entire project, as needed. Weekday paving on Kananaskis Lakes Trail, is also set to begin Monday, August 19 and is expected to wrap up by August 29. The work will be done between during daylight hours, typically from 6 a.m. to 8 p.m. As this is a two-lane highway motorists will be restricted to one lane of traffic, with flag people directing traffic. The work, which will extend the life of both roadways, will take place seven days a week for Highway 1, but is being restricted to weekdays on Kananaskis Lakes Trail to limit the impact on holiday travellers in the area. Construction signs and message boards will alert travellers to the work ahead. Speeds will be reduced in all paving areas. Drivers are reminded to obey all flag persons, signs and signals. Fines for speeding are doubled in construction zones when workers are present. This pavement rehabilitation work is part of highway maintenance investments to improve the longevity of these important roadways and increase safety for motorists.
