Proving that the nut doesnt fall far from the tree, or perhaps in this case the nut doesnt fall far from the nut, my son, Theo, sent thig too me yesterday. Ill submit this metaphor without comment or annotation for I feel it stands very well on its own. Well, except to say that I am very proud of him for the insight. Hope is a fire in a dark, cold forest. With the fire, there is life. Without it, there is death. Sometimes the fire is a blazing inferno, letting one bask in its warm glow. Other times it is barely an ember, giving off just enough heat to allow the person to survive. Too often when the fire is dwindling, we decide that it is extinguished. We see no fuel for the fire, even though we are surrounded by it. Prematurely, we declare that all hope is lost and yet we do not die. We turn our backs from that which could save us, denying its existence at all. Thus we exist in a purgatory of misery, where we receive neither the comfort of hope nor the peace of death. It is therefore the role of others to turn the hopeless back to the embers and help them stoke the fire.
