Ps 90:7-12 7 We are consumed by your anger and terrified by your indignation. 8 You have set our iniquities before you, our secret sins in the light of your presence. 9 All our days pass away under your wrath; we finish our years with a moan. 10 The length of our days is seventy years--or eighty, if we have the strength; yet their span is but trouble and sorrow, for they quickly pass, and we fly away. 11 Who knows the power of your anger? For your wrath is as great as the fear that is due you. 12 Teach us to number our days aright, that we may gain a heart of wisdom. The Preacher said he used his great wisdom to view life here on earth and after having tried all the things that seemed to have value, he determined it was all vanity and like chasing the wind. The vanity of material things is that the more we have the more we want and then, no matter how much we accumulate, we die and leave it to another. The problem with knowledge is that we never seem to have enough and the most educated person has troubles in life just like the one who is totally ignorant and then they both die. We may become the most powerful person in our world but it too is soon gone because death comes to the powerful, famous, rich, wise and athletic as well as those lacking these things. One of the most powerful lessons in the story of the rich man and Lazarus is the short statement that the rich man died too. When we are young, it seems that another year will never come. We cannot imagine someone as old as thirty-five. But soon we reach that mark ourselves and fifty seems not so old as the years move more quickly. Before we realize what has happened we reach the age of 60, 70 and perhaps 80 (for some even more) and the years seem to have just disappeared. We must learn to number our days; that is, we must make each day worthwhile and useful. Our mission is to prepare ourselves to be with God in eternity and to help others do the same as we travel here on earth. The conclusion of the Preacher is that the whole of life is to fear God and keep his commandments because we will give account to him in the end. Lord, teach me to number my days, to use each one to bring you glory and to honor your name and in the process to prepare myself to be with you in eternity. Use me to help others in their journey through life as well. I thank you for the wisdom you have revealed to me in your word and ask to be able to better apply it in my life each day. Please be patient with me and continue to forgive me for my failures to live up to your glory. Fill me with your love so that it overflows to all those around me. I pray in the name of Jesus my Savior and Lord. - Robert
