Psalm 107:4-9: Some wandered in desert wastes, finding no way to an inhabited town; hungry and thirsty, their soul fainted within them. Then they cried to the LORD in their trouble, and he delivered them from their distress; he led them by a straight way, until they reached an inhabited town. Let them thank the LORD for his steadfast love, for his wonderful works to humankind. For he satisfies the thirsty, and the hungry he fills with good things. I was a traveler in Chimbote, Peru in 1970, passing through. The city had experienced a 7.9 Richter scale earthquake some months before. The city was flattened; people were living in the rubble. The scene played outside my taxi window while I was going somewhere else. My first reality check. Human tragedy! Does God really hear these people cry out? How can God possibly deliver them? Jesus provides an answer in Matthew: “Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you something to drink?” Jesus tells us: “Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.” God can only work through each of us. If we do not hear people cry, there will be no deliverance. We convey the love of God through our deeds. Prayer: Lord Jesus, open our ears to hear and eyes to see. Open our hearts to help those in need. Pete M
