Psalm 19:1-6: The heavens are telling the glory of God; and the firmament proclaims his handiwork. Day to day pours forth speech, and night to night declares knowledge. There is no speech, nor are there words; their voice is not heard; yet their voice goes out through all the earth, and their words to the end of the world. In the heavens he has set a tent for the sun, which comes out like a bridegroom from his wedding canopy, and like a strong man runs its course with joy. Its rising is from the end of the heavens, and its circuit to the end of them; and nothing is hidden from its heat. Oh ancient of praises to our God! How wonderful to have this very happy psalm amidst the often sad stories of Lent. A foretaste of the joys of Easter. One can feel the exuberance of spring, the insistence of the bulbs of crocus, daffodil, tulip and narcissus as they muscle their way through hard winter earth. Life WILL begin anew. It must. It is ever God’s plan that joy will spread among the land and his people after the period of trial is past. We must believe in this when life at times seems too much to bear. “…their voice is not heard; yet their voice goes out through all the earth…” I love these writers of scripture in their intense desire to pass along the internal knowing and insight given to them by God. How inadequate words sometimes are. Yet amazingly they have preserved for us thousands of years later the struggle they must have felt as they strove to give form to the formless. What has a voice, but no words? Birds singing, fire crackling, wind rushing, and water tumbling down. Bells tinkling, kettle whistling, baby crying, and things that have no sound- Soft hands, eyes of love, warm blankets, and colors, like brown. Prayer: “All creatures of our God and King, lift up your voices let us sing: Alleluia! Alleluia! Bright burning sun with golden beam, soft silver moon that gently gleams, O praise him, Alleluia! Great rushing winds that are so strong, you clouds above that sail along, O praise him! Dear mother earth who day by day unfolds your blessings on your way… all flowers and fruits that in you grow, let them his glory also show, O praise him! Alleluia! - St Francis of Assisi, Laudato sia Deo mio Signore. Translation – Rev. William Draper 1855-1933 Jeanine V
