Psalm 27 invites me to see the fact fear need not rule me, for God my strength can defend me from all enemies. I have recently learned to pray these psalms as not just talking about those who would stab me in the back (and that speaks to that too), but also about enemies within, those inner tendencies and proclivities which manifest and sabotage my progress in life. This prayer, prayed in that context, is so liberating to me, since I grow up in a performance-based shame-enducing tradition focused on how bad we are. God is bigger than my short-comings, than my shadow sides, and can let even their manifestations become guided into ways that work to my good, if I remain open to God.
