Public Comment Opportunity on Air Quality Designation Ends September 29, 2014 On August 29, 2014, as required by the Clean Air Act, the Environmental Protection Agency opened a public comment period for identifying areas across the nation that are exceeding the annual standard for fine particulate matter levels of air pollution. In coordination with the Idaho Department of Environmental Quality, the EPA proposed to designate a part of Shoshone County, Idaho, that includes the towns of Pinehurst, Smelterville, and Kellogg, as well as the area around those towns, as being in nonattainment with the air quality standard. The EPA will be accepting comments on the proposed area recommendation through September 29, 2014. To date, no planning or decisions have been made about how to reduce emissions in the proposed nonattainment area. Once the area designation becomes final (expected in December 2014) the IDEQ will begin to develop the plan aimed at reducing emissions in the area, with advice from the local communities, and submit it to the EPA in fall 2016.
