Public Health England is urging new students in Cumbria and Lancashire to ensure they get vaccinated against meningococcal C (MenC) infection before beginning university in September. In the UK, all children are offered MenC vaccine to protect them against MenC infection but, as the protection offered by the vaccine can wane, a booster for university freshers is now available. If you were born before September 1995, you do not need another dose. If you were born after September 1995, or are unsure about what vaccines you have received, please consult your GP ahead of arrival. Students from overseas are particularly urged to get the vaccine as it is not always routinely available overseas.
