Public Health Ministry tightens surveillance on Ebola virus BANGKOK, 15 August 2014 (NNT) - The Public Health Ministry has stepped up screening measures at all immigration checkpoints to prevent the spread of Ebola. Dr. Narong Sahamethapat, Permanent Secretary for Public Health, announced that the ministry has prepared measures to deal with the spread of Ebola, including screening all incoming passengers at five airports and 17 ports throughout Thailand. Passengers coming from the four Ebola-hit African countries namely Guinea, Sierra Leone, Liberia, and Nigeria, will be closely monitored. Meanwhile, the ministry has convened a meeting of high-level officials and specialists on how to take care of patients in hospitals in case Ebola strikes. However, the ministry has advised members of the public not to panic or overly react to the situation, as Thailand and other Southeast Asian countries face a relatively low risk of an Ebola outbreak. Ebola can only be transmitted when people come into direct contact with bodily fluids of an infected person such as blood and saliva. The deadly virus, however, cannot spread through the air or water. At this point, the Ministry of Public Health has only advised the public to exercise caution whenever they’re visiting the Ebola-hit countries, or to avoid traveling there, if possible.
