Public Information Notice – Peace River Update The following information has been communicated to Mackenzie County office by AB SERD: “The Peace River was flown from upstream of Fort Vermilion to the Chutes today (Tuesday April 29) between 15:30 to 17:00 MDT. The ice remains mostly unchanged from the observations conducted on Monday. The ice jam is still intact upstream of Fort Vermilion and a second ice jam remains upstream of the Chutes (downstream of Fort Vermilion). The ice downstream of the Chutes remains solid. Water levels in the two jam are high and into the willows and forests and some large expanses of farming fields. The water in the fields and forests was very dark brown indicating it was river water and not local snowmelt. Observations on Tuesday’s flight that were not present during Monday’s flight: - The two jams were a few km shorter - New but dirty ice was arriving at the upstream end of the upstream jam at about 30% concentration - There was a good run of Wabasca River ice that had about 10 km of ice to break through to make it into the downstream jam on the Peace River. A web Camera has been set-up upstream of the Highway 88 Bridge upstream of Fort Vermilion. Photograph at last light on Tuesday is attached.” A flight is scheduled for 10:00AM on April 30, 2014. Mackenzie County continues to monitor the River utilizing internal sources. Fort Vermilion Residents located in the 100 year flood zone urged to remain on alert. Mackenzie County’s temporary EOC will remain open until the ice jam situation is resolved. Mackenzie County administration is in close contact with RCMP, local agencies and utilities companies (ATCO). If you have questions, please call our office at (780) 927-3718.
