Public Lecture How We Think: A Theory of Human Decision-Making, With a Focus on Teaching Prof Alan Schoenfeld, UC Berkeley How do people make decisions “in the moment” as they engage in complex activities like mathematical problem solving, tutoring, and teaching, or even cooking and medical diagnosis? In developing his theory Alan asks: What determines what that person does, on a moment-by-moment basis, as he or she engages in that activity? What resources does the person draw upon, and why? What shapes the choices the person makes? What accounts for the effectiveness (in problem solving, the success or failure) of that person’s efforts? He will discuss his claim that knowing about a teacher’s knowledge, goals, and beliefs enables you to explain their decision making and how these ideas have implications that help teachers to become better mathematics teachers. Alan Schoenfeld holds the Elizabeth and Edward Conner Chair in Education and is an affiliated professor in the Mathematics Department at the University of California, Berkeley. In 2011 he was awarded the ICME Klein Medal, the highest international distinction in mathematics education and in 2013 the AERA Distinguished Contributions to Research in Education award. Professor Schoenfeld is a University of Auckland Foundation Distinguished Visitor. 6.30 - 7.30 pm July 2nd Building 303, 38 Princes St Lecture in SLT1 on ground floor (303-G01) Light refreshments on Level 4 from 6 pm Please note that the venue is different from the venue we used in 2012.
