Public Protector Thuli Madonsela has found that President Jacob Zuma misled Parliament when he claimed that the Zuma family was responsible for the cost of buildings in his private homestead in Nkandla. Madonsela found Zuma might have done so unintentionally. The two-year long investigation, entitled Secure in Comfort, found that the government had footed the bills for items such as Zuma’s private visitors’ centre, the cattle kraal and chicken run, the swimming pool and the amphitheatre. “The president and his family benefited from this,” says the report. Madonsela also found that Zuma’s failure take action to contain the costs, which are now conservatively estimated to have risen to R246m, when the news broke in 2009, was a violation of the Executive Ethics’ Code and was inconsistent with Zuma’s office as a member of the Cabinet. The report also recommends that Zuma must fork out a “reasonable percentage” of the costs, to be determined with the help of the National Treasury. City Press
