Translation Kia Orana to our people listening to the radio this morning. I have a very important announcement to make. In accordance with Article 37(3) of the Constitution of the Cook Islands,the Prime Minister has advised me to dissolve Parliament immediately and to call for a General Election to be held on Wednesday the gth of July 2014. I have accepted that advice and hereby dissolve Parliament immediately. The government is of the view that it is necessary to have early elections because of the need to have the incoming government in place well in advance of the 501 anniversary of self government in 2015. Plans for that major event would need to be made and confirmed at the earliest possible time to allow the full participation of our people here, our people overseas as well as our diplomatic partners and friends. An early election will also allow the incoming government to prepare and pass an appropriate budget in plenty of time to give full effect of its plans for this major event. In accordance with convention the current government will continue to manage the affairs of government in a caretaker capacity to ensure the continued smooth operation of government. It is my sincere wish that the elections and the campaign are conducted in a peaceful and respectful manner. May God bless the Cook Islands.
