Public and Community Affairs Intern Location: Met Council Main Office, 120 Broadway Salary: Unpaid Term: Spring Semester Hours: Flexible Primary Purpose: We are seeking a full-time public and community affairs intern to further our efforts to raise visibility for the agency, its programs and services as well as support the work of Met Council’s Jewish Community Council (JCC) grassroots network and advocacy initiatives. The Public and Community Affairs intern will work directly with the Communication Manager as well as the JCC Network Coordinator. Essential Duties and Responsibilities: 1. Assist with the creation of Met Council’s language bank to create a consistent message throughout Met Council’s network. Through increased awareness, Met Council staff will be able to use the language bank for grant proposals, donor meetings, elected officials meetings, new hiring and much more. As a result, more clients will move out of poverty through employment services, housing assistance and access to care 2. Assist with online and print communication Press and Media Relations: • Write, edit and disseminate press releases, statements and other media-focused materials Provide media relations and outreach support for agency programs, projects and special events • Take photos and transcribe quotes during events to post on website and write newsletter articles and post-event press releases Writing/Publication: • Write stories for the print newsletter, articles for print media and general copy for flyers, brochures and other marketing materials Online Communication: • Write website homepage stories and articles for web pages 3. Assist the JCC Network Coordinator with creating weekly newsletter to be distributed to JCC Network members regarding events in their communities, grant and funding opportunities, changes in the non-profit and Jewish communal landscape and Met Council updates. 4. Assist JCC Network Coordinator in preparing for Summer Food Truck event and High Holiday Food distributions which take place during the summer and early fall by reaching out to JCCs to coordinate dates, times, and locations for these important food distributions. 5. Working with the JCC Network Coordinator and the JCC Network to determine best practices for monthly food distributions at each site. Conducting research at each of the sites to find which practices work best and which are least effective in serving clients on a monthly basis. Qualifications: A rising junior or senior with strong written communication skills, and an interest in media relations, advocacy, community-based organizations and alleviating poverty in New York City.
