Public comment period is extended for proposed Pa. hazardous waste facility near Trenton Nicole Mulvaney | Times of Trenton By Nicole Mulvaney | Times of Trenton Follow on Twitter on December 23, 2014 at 1:44 PM FALLS TOWNSHIP, Pa. — Pennsylvania’s Department of Environmental Protection is giving the public an extra two weeks to submit comments on the proposed hazardous waste treatment facility southwest across the Delaware River from Trenton and Bordentown. Officials pushed the deadline back based on requests received following a meeting earlier this month at which representatives of Elcon Recycling Center detailed plans to build the facility in the Keystone Industrial Port Complex, DEP spokeswoman Lynda Rebarchak said. Elcon is an Israeli water recycling company with an office in West Windsor. The commercial treatment facility at 100 Dean Sievers Place would treat liquid waste coming from chemical and pharmaceutical companies. Comments on the first phase of the application were previously due Friday. Some attendees at the Dec. 10 meeting said Elcon’s presentation did not provide enough information to make a decision and deceptively did not explain plans for an incinerator. “I think anytime that the citizens have more opportunities to respond is a good thing, and this allows for more thoughtful input,” said Fred Stine of the Delaware Riverkeeper Network. It gives the environmental community more time to inform the public so they have more information to base their comments on. DEP officials will review the phase one application to assess the proximity of the proposed facility to water supplies, wetlands and flood hazard zones and determine if the site is appropriate for this facility. Elcon will then be required to submit a more thorough plan for DEP officials to review. Elcon will hold another public information session in early February after comments are received, Stine said. The Delaware Riverkeeper Network will be hiring a chemical engineer to evaluate the air quality aspects of Elcons plan, Stine said. The public may submit written comments to: Hazardous Waste Facility Siting Team Leader DEP Southeast Regional Office 2 E. Main St. Norristown, PA 19401. Comments may also be submitted by email to [email protected] with Elcon noted in the subject line. Copies of the application are available for review by appointment at DEP’s Southeast Regional Office by calling 484-250-5910 and at the Rachel Carson State Office Building in Harrisburg by calling 717-787-6239.
