Public service vehicle operators will soon have to pay royalties - TopicsExpress

Public service vehicle operators will soon have to pay royalties for the music they play in their vehicles. Talks are now underway between the government and the Land Transport Authority to license buses and taxis through-out Fiji. The Fiji Performing Rights Association is awaiting response on a submission made to the Land Transport Authority on licensing public service vehicles. Director Eremasi Tamanisau says the Association has proposed that PSV operators pay ten cents per day for the music they play on board. “To be fair to the member’s people must get paid for the work that they have done. And our members work is composing music and playing of this music and this is being played in buses and taxis and no one is paying for it. The Fiji Taxi Association says they have had a meeting with the Association earlier however not much progress was made. They say they need to see the proposal first. “We would like to have a broad assessment with our members Fiji wide who are using the music in their vehicles because most of them are playing radio and only a few play CD and other music. So we need to have a full assessment before we can say whether the Taxi Association will agree to that or no”. The Fiji Bus Operators Association says they are yet to receive any formal requests, but if it is made they will take it to their executive meeting and discuss it further. “Firstly we would like to see the proposal itself and then we will look at what are our legal requirements in the proposal”. The Fiji Performing Rights Association has already licensed Fiji Airways and some tourist boats operators for the music they play on board. fbc.fj/fiji/15672/musicians-propose-royalty-payment
