Puerto Rican writer Jesús Colón founded an intellectual movement - TopicsExpress

Puerto Rican writer Jesús Colón founded an intellectual movement involving poets, writers, musicians and artists who are Puerto Rican or of Puerto Rican descent and who live in or near New York City which became known as the Nuyorican Movement. The phenomenon of the Nuyoricans came about when many Puerto Ricans who migrated to New York City faced difficult situations and hardships, such as racial discrimination. A Nuyorican subculture developed. In 1980, Puerto Rican poets Miguel Algarín, Miguel Piñero and Pedro Pietri established the Nuyorican Poets Café on Manhattans Lower East Side (236 E 3rd Street, between Avenues B and C) which is now considered a New York landmark.[38]
