Puerto Varas: The City of Roses Puerto Varas is a commune that is located in the province of Llanquihue in the X Region of Los Lagos, exactly at the southeast from the Llanquihue Lake, 20 km from Puerto Montt. With more than 33 thousand inhabitants, this locality is surrounded by the Osorno and Calbuco volcanoes. Climate in Puerto Varas The climate here is mild rainy, without dry season with precipitations during the whole year, which can fluctuate between 1200 to 3000 mm. its average yearly temperature is of 10 ºC to 13ºC, the maximum temperatures in summer can reach 25ºC and the minimum in winter -6ºC. History of Puerto Varas It is not known with accuracy when Puerto Varas was founded, nevertheless, its beginnings go back to 1852. During June of that year, through a supreme decree, the uninhabited territories of the south of Chile began to be incorporated. The zone was inhabited principally by German and Swiss immigrants, who constructed its towns on the banks of the Llanquihue Lake. It was not until 1925 that the locality was recognized as a commune by the Department of the Interior. The name of Puerto Varas was adopted in honor to the Secretary of the Interior of that period, Mr. Antonio Varas de la Barra; but the commune is also known as “ The City of the Roses ”, due to the big quantity of rosebushes that embellish it. Flora and fauna Puerto Varas is a zone very rich in flora and fauna. Among the native arboreal species that stands out are the Chilean firetree, which flower is red and lengthened, and the Ulmo, which gives a white flower of big size. Within the animal species of the commune are the pudú, Chilean deer, characterized for being the smallest of the world; to the Ringed kingfisher, small bird of blue, green and orange colors; in addition to pumas, Geoffroy’s Cat, Culpeo, river otters, Grison, among others. Attractions of Puerto Varas Every corner of Puerto Varas offers a number of tourist destinations. The commune is known for its beautiful sceneries, casino, colonial architecture and flora and native fauna. Among the natural attractions of the zone, we can find the National Park Vicente Pérez Rosales, the oldest of the country and that contains a vast extension of virgin forest. This park is suitable to admire important beauties of the zone, in addition to lodging diverse animals and being rich in wild vegetation. From the National Park it is possible to glimpse the Todos los Santos Lake, surrounded by the volcanoes Osorno Puntiagudo and Tronador hill; and the falls of the Petrohué River, in its surroundings are multiple suitable paths for excursions towards the native forest. It is also possible to visit the Phillipi Park, filled with forests and plants; it has numerous paths that allow access on foot or by car. This park lodges a monumental cross that is lit during the night, symbol of faith and gratitude of the immigrants of the zone. On its top it is possible to find a viewpoint, from which Puerto Varas and its surroundings are seen. Also, it is not possible to stop visiting important architectural destinations of this commune such as the Church of Jesús’s Sacred Heart, the Lutheran Church and Puerto Chico, where the constructions date from the beginning of the XXth century. Now then, if it is interesting to you to know of the history of the locality, you must go to the Schneider Museum, to the Pablo Fierro Municipal Museum and to the Antonio Felmes Museum, the last one located in the area of Nueva Braunau. These three cultural destinations deal with the colonization of Puerto Varas and have in exhibition diverse historical articles. How to get there Located to 1005 km from Santiago, it is possible to come to Puerto Varas by land and air. By land, from the north or the south, it is possible to gain access to this commune on the Pan-American Main Highway of Chile.
