Pull out the Kleenex everyone! Four weeks ago, a littler of five young Heeler puppies arrived at a high kill shelter in Kingsville, Texas. The odds that all these 5-6 week old pups would make it out of the shelter and into a loving home were slim to none. Despite what people believe, puppies in this area are NOT easily adopted. Parvo thrives in the south Texas dirt and stray puppies are extremely susceptible to the potentially fatal disease. I took photos of the snuggling pups, posted them to my FB page and prayed for miracle. Day after day, the tagging increased and number of shares grew. I continued to visit the Heelers and add new pictures into my album. The days stretched into weeks. The pictures, tagging and sharing all paid off. After seeing the photos of the Heelers, Darren Hicks (Susan) reached out and put me in contact with Evergreen Animal Protection League out of Colorado. With Susan, Tina Flanagan and Fran Klaas, we worked together and managed to transport all FIVE puppies to Colorado. I have the unfortunate pleasure of knowing that 20% (at best) of the puppies in this area will make out of the shelter alive; an entire litter making it out is rare. But, THESE pictures and the opportunity the puppies have been given is what makes this line of work worthwhile. Their story is so much sweeter to me because I have experienced the bitter pain of countless animals who were not as lucky. Yes, this is a long post containing some unpleasant truths. But I hope after reading it, people will understand the amount of teamwork, effort and dedication involved in animal rescue. One person, one picture, one share makes all the difference. If you dont believe me, then take a look at these Southeast Texas Heelers in the arms of their Colorado families.
