Pumpkins Progress Report- October 27th 2014 I dreamt I saw a mermaid Swimming in the sea Her body wreathed in seaweed Her long hair flowing free I dreamt I saw the face of God Light up the sky with love I dreamt I saw the angels Upon the clouds above A bright new day came into view Before my weary eyes The rising sun across the sea Burned brightly in the sky Seagulls flew from clifftops Into a world so bright As a mermaid wreathed in seaweed Swam into the light She swam along so gracefully Tween the windows of the sea Treasure of a thousand sunken ships Within reach of her fingertips I dreamt I saw a mermaid Swimming in the sea Her body wreathed in seaweed Her long hair flowing free Is a dream a dream, or is a dream a vision from God? Well, yesterday I attended an Evangelical church service with my daughter Lauren at Market Harborough. I enjoyed the sermons and the singing, but I dont really subscribe to the vision of God being an old man on a throne in the sky with a long flowing beard. A judgmental God and authority on high to be feared and obeyed. I like the Buddhist idea of God being a part of everything- the trees, the flowers, the sky, the mountains, the rivers and streams and the stars above. Many of the people who spoke at the church service claimed that God had spoken to them, but when they elaborated on this, it became apparent that they had experienced a series of dreams, and because they are so devoted to God and their Christian cause, they perceived those dreams to have been sent from God. Hence my question above- is a dream a dream, or is a dream a vision from God? Personally, I believe that dreams are the workings of the sub-conscious mind whilst experiencing rapid eye movement sleep. Dreams are often the sub-conscious minds way of sorting out thoughts. Hence the saying- sleep on it and itll become clear in the morning. Karl Marx wrote- Religion is the opiate of the people. I dont really subscribe to that point of view either. I am definitely not an atheist. Some people believe that this life is just the passing stage of a journey to the Kingdom of Heaven. I believe that we should create heaven on earth and live for today. I know that religion and faith in God is a great comfort to many people and I respect that, but what if when you die there isnt anything else? Some people may deny themselves experiences and enjoyment in this life to get into the Kingdom of Heaven, but if there isnt a Kingdom of Heaven, then that would be really sad. Nobody really knows for sure. We just keep rolling on, day after day, underneath the moon and stars, hoping for the best and making the most of transient pleasures. My daughter enjoys going to church with her grandmother though, so I thought that I would go along to see what it was all about. Its good to be a part of your childs life experiences. Well, its been a fantastic weekend of fun and pumpkin carving. Many a Jack-o-lantern has glowed in the night. The kids had a great time and the big kid had a great time too. The next Pumpkins Progress Report will be tomorrow evening. I woke up a bit earlier this morning due to the changed clock time. Its a rum old do this tinkering around with time. God bless you all. End of sermon- Father Ted.
