Punch PDP faults demands by G-7 governors SEPTEMBER 21, 2013 BY OLUSOLA FABIYI, ABUJA Abubakar Baraje The Peoples Democratic Party on Friday told the G-7 governors and members of their group, who are being led Alhaji Abubakar Kawu Baraje, that their demands were neither serious nor responsible. The party said the aggrieved members of the party should stop making unrealistic demands. The governors are Alhaji Sule Lamido(Jigawa), Alhaji Aliyu Wamakko(Sokoto), Mr. Rabiu Kwankwanso(Kano), Aliyu Babangida(Niger), Abdulfatah Ahmed (Kwara), Murtala Nyako (Adamawa) and Mr. Rotimi Amaechi (Rivers). These governors and some other notable members of the party, who are aggrieved with the way the party is being run, have formed a faction of the party, New PDP and are demanding that President Goodlukc Jonathan should not contest in 2015. They also demanded that state party structures should be returned to the governors, and that the suspension slammed on the Rivers State governor should be lifted. But speaking at a press briefing in Abuja, on Friday, the National Publicity Secretary, Chief Olisa Metuh said the party had taken a critical look at the implications of the actions and utterances of the splinter party. He, however, assured that the Bamanga Tukur-led PDP would emerge stronger and better regardless of the outcome of the much anticipated October 7 reconcilatory meeting by the party, reiterating that the National Working Committee of the PDP is proud of Tukur’s leadership. But he ruled out sanctions for the splinter party at the moment, noting that sanctions could not be given while peace process was ongoing. Metuh said, “We are talking about what has to do with party constitution, about the fate of our party and country. It has nothing to do with display of unnecessary sentiments and emotions.” “The demands of the other groups in any setting people have their demands. They have heard the demands of the other groups but I am sure you have heard whether our national chairman has a demand that he needs, if he has a demand and you are going into negotiation, keep it in the family.
