Punjab at cross roads! : Kanwar Sandhu Usually successful completion of its term of five years by a Government is appreciable. And when a Government is elected for yet another term of five years, it ought to be seen as a blessing in the real sense. Whatever the reasons for its success in polls for the second consecutive term, this is what the SAD-BJP government in Punjab was able to achieve in 2012 elections. One would expect the Government to work overtime to make an even bigger impact. But midway in its second term, the SAD-BJP government appears to be floundering in every sense. Be it the response of its own cadres, the opposition parties, the media or even the social new media on the net - there are hardly any voices of praise for the government headed by Sr and Jr Badals. The Government itself finds nothing to celebrate at the half-way stage. No wonder, the government has not been talking about the event. The Chief Minister when asked about his achievements during the two and a half years said it was to have ensured peace and harmony. But then wasnt that achieved many years ago? Also, isnt that the natural duty of a government? The economy is in such bad shape that the government is mortgaging its properties to manage. Though the SAD is seen as a farmers party, the farmers are out in the streets to protest. There have been two protests by farmers from Punjab in Delhi during the past two days. Despite promises, there has hardly been any fresh investment in the state. The existing industry is protesting against lack of tax rationalisation. 24X7 power supply has remained a dream even during this summer. Health and education sectors are worse off than ever before. The NRI woes are growing. It is time for the government to take a reality check. After all what is wrong that it is getting so much of flak on the internet and otherwise. First of all, I think the important thing is to end the dichotomy of leadership in Punjab. People are wondering and this includes even the senior officers and ministers: who is in-charge? Is it the CM (Sr Badal) or the Deputy CM (Sukhbir Singh Badal)? For effective command, there has to be one commander.
