Punk Diva before anything as obscure as a punk diva was ever - TopicsExpress

Punk Diva before anything as obscure as a punk diva was ever defined. Nina Simone was as much Dinah Washington as she was Patti Smith, just as Ella Fitzgerald as she was Exene Cervenka. With the musical prowess to be as graceful as Brubeck, she could still punch society in the eye with her social commentary. Music was the platform for her to put her message right in the face of society (Mississippi, God Damn!). Her moments of melancholy were on par with those of Frank Sinatra, Chet Baker and the great Billie Holliday. Here is an example of the power of dynamics in music in one of my favorite Nina Simone tunes - Black is the Color of My True Loves Hair. The second clip is from a performance in London in 1968 - Aint Got No, I Got Life. Two of the many reasons why I love Nina Simone! https://youtube/watch?v=NWmCbEbMmeU https://youtube/watch?v=L5jI9I03q8E
