Puppy Mills - Yes We Have Them If you were to ask most people if we have puppy mills here, they would say no. The truth is that mills are big business in Alabama due to rural nature of our state. They can function out of sight and out of mind. And they have a huge impact on our shelters as dogs are infused into the market and as dogs are seized following some law enforcement raid about neglect and abuse. Speaking to the national issue, mills are essentially commercial dog farming operations. Some are small. Some are huge. Millions of dollars are made and exchanged and the sad fact is that this is big business because of us. All puppies are cute. When we allow ourselves to be blinded by the cuteness we see and we allow emotion to overcome common sense, we inadvertently create a demand for living creatures from people who hold them in no higher regard than a chair or a paper plate. Please educate yourself about the dog farming industry and then just say no to pet store puppies and to mills which sell dogs in newspaper ads and in parking lots. Just because a dog came from a licensed USDA kennel does not mean that dog came from a good place.
