Purdin Harvest Countdown - Part I In around six weeks the Purdin Koi Harvests begin and we get to see if the massive work load necessary to produce and rear Koi has paid off or not. Recall having a conversation in the now sadly closed Nomole in Nagaoka, Japan one evening with a group that included a few famous Niigata breeders who will remain nameless for obvious reasons. One has just lost a pond full of his best Tosai, another had, due to exhaustion, left a valve open which drained a pond full of some of his best Nissai and another was cycling up to one of his ponds and witnessed a heron flying off with one of his best Kohaku, unsurprisingly the conversation turned to the question...why the hell do we do it? Most of the comments and conclusions are not repeatable but the consensus was that the list of required skills was pretty specific to Koi Breeders and included a mashochistic predisposition, obsessive stubbornness and a degree of mental instability as there really can be no other explanation. If anyone thinks this is an exaggeration go work for a week of a Koi farm! However…the excitement and anticipation at this time of year as harvest time approaches, reaches almost fever pitch as sneaked glimpses, the odd flash of beni, sunbeams reflected of white base skin and the size of the contents of the growing pond begin to emerge, all combine to create an excitement thats also unique to Koi breeders. Heres a quick snapshot of some Purdin Tosai that we hope to harvest in six weeks or so.
