Purge Part 4 - Dixit Malcolm Rigg and Kirsty Rigg this is another great family game and can take loads of players. Dixit may be the perfect party game for people who don’t know each other. Weird caveat I know but let me explain. Dixit has a very simple premise. Each player is dealt a number of cards at the start of the game. Each card has a beautiful illustration of something on it, like something out of a childrens book. (Link examples) The player who is lead chooses a word or a phrase and plays one of their cards face down on the table. Each other player then plays a card from their hand face down that they think best matches what the lead said. Those cards are then shuffled together and turned face up. Now each player other than the lead uses a unique token to vote for the card they think best matches the word or phrase called out by the lead and here is where things get clever. If everyone guesses the lead’s card then they get points and the lead does not. If no one guesses the lead’s card then he does not get points. If at least one person guesses correctly but not everyone then the lead starts to get points. So this leads to an interesting situation where the lead doesn’t want to be too obscure or too obvious, he wants to get it just right. This is also why I said at the start that it is the perfect game for people who don’t know each other. The mechanics are such that if a couple of people know each other round the table and others don’t they can be at an advantage as they can use words and phrases that might mean a different thing to each other than the rest of the group. Could be a problem, might not be, but the game does lend itself to that kind of manipulation. Stay or Go? Honestly I’m not sure on this one. I think it should probably go as it doesn’t get to the table as a filler very often, and that is the kind of game it is. It’s a beautiful thing and I do recommend it to anyone setting out on their boardgaming journey and also to designers as an example of how much you can do with the minimum number of mechanics. boardgamegeek/boardgame/39856/dixit
