Purge threats have been circulating through social media As some of you may have seen or at least heard about, Purge threats have been making there way around social media. The threat has even been found here in Franklinton and the police department has taken all appropriate precautions regarding the event. For those not familiar with the Purge, a simple internet search will take you to the 2013 movie in which any and all crime is legalized for a 12 hour period. The Purge Anarchy; An American Tradition (2014) is a follow-up to the original movie. In both movies, lawlessness is the theme and acts of violence to purge undesirables from the community surrounds the plot. The Franklinton Police Department has received numerous phone calls regarding the social media post about our town and the matter is currently being investigated. The act of causing the general public to be in fear for their safety by communication of information that the commission of a crime of violence is imminent is deemed Terrorizing. Therefore, this matter is being treated as a criminal offense and the original author of the message is being sought. Anyone sharing the social media threat can also be charged under the terrorizing statute. Facebook and Instagram have been contacted and searches are underway to identify those individual accounts where the Purge message has been posted. Despite removal of the post, information is able to be obtained through source code and website data. One key aspect to remember is the Purge is a movie. In order for the event to transpire, there must be a suspension of government and that is not going to happen. Be assured that the Franklinton Police Department will continue to provide services and ANYONE caught acting in a manner consistent with the perceived threat will be dealt with accordingly.
