Purim is this Saturday and Sunday. What??? You dont know about Purim?!? Ok, you think St. Patricks Day is a chance to celebrate! Well, you aint seen nothin! Purim is the ONLY event in the Bible that actually includes instructions that whenever it is celebrated, the celebrants must celebrate until they can no longer tell the difference between the names of Mordecai and Haman. ?? So, its the celebration that concludes the wonderful biblical story of Esther! Queen Esther was a Jew, but no one knew it--even the king! A wicked man named Haman convinced the king that all the Jews should be killed. To save her people, Queen Esther intervened with the king, explaining that he would need to kill her, too. The evil plot was thwarted! And, every year at this time in synagogues and in homes throughout the world the story of Esther is told. Whenever Hamans name is mentioned in the story, everyone boos and hisses and bangs on metal pots and pans! Its a pretty fun event! But there are many lessons in this story for us. Sometimes Episcopalians can be pretty secretive about their religious faith, maybe theyre uncomfortable talking about their relationship with God or maybe they dont want to stand out. What we learn from the story of Esther is that when it gets right down to it, what we believe and who we are matters very much and it shapes HOW we love others. We must always beware of blending to the point of forgetting who we are and whose we are. ~Ema Cynthia+
