They value locally sourced food, Transparency, Sustainability, and Community The Facts: The fresh produce that consumers purchase at their grocery store is sometimes 2-3 weeks old. Tomatoes and other fruits & veggies are picked when they are unripened. The amount of nutrition in the produce items have diminished substantially. At the Purple Porch, your produce is often picked at its ripest point on the same day you order your food, offering you maximum nutritional benefits. (Plus, co-op member-owners find that fresh produce tastes better!) The produce found at the supermarkets are varieties made to withstand long distance traveling and being able to be picked unripened. They are not chosen for their flavor. Most foods from the supermarket travel an average of 1,500 miles before reaching our plates! The distance and time between farm and fork results in reduced flavor and nutrients, and could include foods which are artificially ripened using chemicals. The difference at Purple Porch is that youll find a variety of heirloom vegetables chosen because they thrive in our region and are delicious. The farmers harvest their crops at the peak of maturity and deliver them to us within 24 hours. Our farmers are located within 60 miles of South Bend, which reduces fossil fuel use and increases flavor and freshness.
