Beyond the obvious benefits of strengthening the muscles in our chest, arms and shoulders, push-ups are incredibly effective at strengthening your core muscles. When performed correctly - back flat, full range of motion, head down, abs held tight - the rectus abdominus and transverse abdominus are consistently engaged. The push-ups versatility is also staggering - they can be done from the toes for more of a challenge, or from the knees when were just beginning to perfect our form; in a plyometric fashion, with an explosive push on the up phase of the movement; by taking your knees out to the side or in to your chest on the descent, one by one, to work your obliques; or even one-armed!
