Push ups: 1 Tip for a great set up! 5 Cues for focus. Did you know that one of the best foundational exercises you could teach is the push up? As it serves as a great launching pad to more complex movements like the bench press, overhead press and dips, we suggest working consistently to improve the push up and/or the plank. This will depend on your clients fitness level, as well as mobility and stability factors. Here is 1 common error youll find in the weight room: Watch for elbow flaring out Aligning the shoulder, elbow and wrist joints will key be to a proper set up. Be sure that in setting up the base of this exercise, to externally rotate the shoulders. This action will not only keep the joint from injury, but it will also produce greater muscle activation of the pecs and triceps. Never allow the shoulders to go into internal rotation as this could later translate into injury, including impingement and rotator cuff issues. Here are a few good cues to get you started: Set hands shoulder width apart fingers pointing straight ahead Keep creases/pits of armpits pointing forward Avoid locking out elbow joints keep weight distributed over center of hands Find out more on the how to correct another common error: the lumbar sag.
