Putin is right about NATO. When the Cold War ended, we should - TopicsExpress

Putin is right about NATO. When the Cold War ended, we should have accepted Russia as a friend and formed an alliance with the newly democratic, capitalist Russia. Instead, we raced to move NATO into Russias front yard, formed alliances with the small, inconsequential new Republics in the Baltic area and in the Caucasus, striving to rub Russias nose in the failure of its former Soviet empire. Then, the West decided to interfere in Ukrainian affairs, pushing Russia to finally react. After the collapse of the Soviet Union and the end of the Cold War, what was NATOs purpose, other than keeping its foot on Russias neck? This was extraordinary foolish, short-sighted and self-destructive on the part of the West --Russia is now militarily aligned and allied with China. Is that in any way whatsoever in the best interests of the US or of western Europe? And it was entirely foreseeable and predictable! The West has no excuse for its idiotic actions over the past 25 years with respect to its treatment of Russia and the consequences of our own folly.
