Putins speech to the Federal Assembly is just mind-boggling. It is his personal farewell speech to Europe. This speech represents the old Europe that we have all worked so hard to leave behind and to replace with new, more civilized, more decent forms of interaction between individuals, between groups, between nations. The irony here is, of course, that at a more profound societal level, Russia continues to Europeanize. I see the events of the past weeks as a last-ditch attempt to pull Russian society away from its future and back to its past. It is unlikely to work.
