Putting aside for the moment questions about whether we should be waging this air war and what it’s really about, it’s altogether appropriate that an Arab woman should be taking issue with the Islamic State from the air. The Islamic State stands for the oppression of women. It stands for walking backwards into history instead of forward. We now know from archaeologists that Viking women didn’t just manage the shields for Viking warriors, they were warriors themselves. So, whether we approve or not, we’re watching history being made. This is a deliberate in-your-face challenge to ISIS and what it represents. They treat women as chattel and now a woman is bombing them. The symbolism is unmistakable.
