Putting in motion an initiative to overhaul the education sector, the NDA government is planning to reform regulatory bodies like the University Grants Commission, AICTE and NCTE that govern higher education. “I am happy to share with you, be it UGC, AICTE or the National Council for Teachers Education... that India needs to redefine its destiny, by redefining how we manage education,” HRD minister Smriti Irani said here on Thursday. “We have undertaken review of most of our regulatory bodies... We can design a path forward which takes cognisance of the needs of the future,” she said at a Higher Education Summit. The HRD ministry has set up separate committees to review and restructure the functioning of UGC, AICTE and NCTE.
