(Putting this in its own post for visibility). Man I love this video! Orange Caramels 3rd single MV Catallena dropped today (March 12th), featuring the trio in various sushi guises. They begin the MV as mermaids ripped from the ocean to be sold as raw fish for sushi chefs, then move on to cosplaying various sashimi and sushi side-items. The narrative of the song (and to a certain extent, the MV too) follows the singers strange attraction to a woman called Catallena (I’ve fallen for her/ Even as a girl, I can see she’s so great/ She’s temperamental but I want to see her/ I want to know her/ I want to dance with her...), bizarrely portrayed as a mannish Octopus in the MV. I have a theory, though, that the Catallena or red sun of the lyric refers to a personification of Japan. It seems a pretty straightforward symbology: Japans flag is a red sun, and descriptions like Chic and proud and My temperamental Catallena/ Everyone is falling for her could easily refer to fascination with Japans culture. She sings I’m angry/ but I want to dance for an hour, suggesting some bitterness towards the arrogant culture, annoyance with her attraction but an inability to fight it. Just my interpretation. Either way, a fun lyric and an awesome MV!
