Q ?-What is the meaning of urs? Is there any proof of celebrating urs ceremony of Aulia Allah? Bismihita’la, Al jawabu biawnil wahhab, The literary meaning of “Urs” is marriage, that is why the bride and groom are called ‘Aroos’. But in technical sense the date of demise of Allah’s beloved is known as urs. It is mentioned in “Mishkatul Masabeeh” the chapter of proving the punishment of the grave that Nakeerain (two angels who come to everyone’s grave and ask three questions) used to say at the success of a pious deceased, “Nam kanaumatil aroos”, means sleep,“just like a bride”. Sleep as Nakeerain said to Allah’s beloved aroos. So, the day of their passing away is called “Urs”. The other reason is that as the day of burial is the day of visiting the holy prophet Sallallahu Alahi Wasallam, so it is called ‘Urs”. The great and well-known walie kamil Hazrat Sharfudeen Yahaya Muneeri Alahirrahma narrates one hadith in his famous book named “Mukhkhul Maani” referring to “Tafseere Zahidi” that after the completion of te funeral of holy prohet Sllallahu Wasallam Abu Bakr Siddique Radiallahu Tala Anhu was selected as the first caliph. Thereafter, he prepared a lot of food, and distributed it amongst the inhabitants of holy Madinah. The people asked “What is the occasion”? “What is the speciality of this day”? Hazrat Abu Bakr replied “Ala ta’lamoon alyaumu ursu rasoolillah”. Means “today is the urs of Rasoolullah Sallallahu Wasallam”. So, the word urs is not newly introduced, rather, it was first mentioned by Hazrat Abu Bakr Radiyallahu Ta’ala Anhu. In addition, it is written in Tafseer-e-Kabeer and Tafseer-e- Durre Mansoor that the holy prohet Sallallahu Alahi Wasallam used to visit and greet the holy graves of martyrs of ‘Wuhud’ every year and after his leaving the world his four caliphs did the same. Thus, it became clarified by the above evidences that to celebrate the urs ceremony is not an innovation but the sunnah of the prophet’s companions.
