Q & A: People are asking me why so much personal information is required for flying, cruising, or even taking a train nowadays. Since the tragedy of 9/11 a new government organization was formed called Homeland Security. The Travel Security Administration (which is now an international organization) of that department (TSA) is now present in all airports with commercial air service, all train stations, and cruise terminals. For all air, rail or cruise travel full legal names (first, middle & last) of the traveler must be provided as well as dates of birth, citizenship, and contact information. The TSA and the travel provider use this information for screening purposes, which hopefully keeps anyone on a government watch list, a terrorist list, and even felons with outstanding warrants from traveling on commercial aircraft, trains, and cruise ships. Additionally TSA screening of each person boarding any of these modes of travel is done in one form another to make sure no one is boarding with a weapon, a dangerous substance, etc. Carry on limitations vary from these different forms of travel. For example, you cannot carry on any liquids, creams or gels of more than 3 oz. However that restriction is not applicable to cruising.
